In the latest January 2014 Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame first-round challenge, we pit two artists who couldn't be more different. We know ... we say that a lot. But we mean it this time.

Steely Dan are one the brainiest and most sophisticated bands to ever attach themselves to the rock genre. Combining jazz-inspired instrumental precision and lyrics that often read like the most condescending put-downs ever uttered without resorting to insults, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker led Steely Dan through some of the '70s' best albums.

Scorpions, on the other hand, have no time for such subtle jabs with their words and music. Backed by timeless power riffs and promising to rock various worlds with all the force of a tropical cyclone, they built their rock 'n' roll on more traditional foundations. Even though they hail from Germany, their music is strictly universal in its hard-rock appeal.

So, who's it gonna be? The jazz-rock giants who use their brains or the hard-rock titans who think with something located a little lower? It's up to you to decide which artist makes it to the next round. You can cast your ballot once a day between now and Jan. 19, 2014, at 11:59 PM EST. The winner will be announced on Feb. 3. Be sure to read our official rules, and good luck to both of our latest Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame candidates!
