Attention, single ladies of Indiana: It looks like John Mellencamp is back on the market.

People reports that Mellencamp and Meg Ryan, a low-key couple since shortly after his last marriage ended in 2010, have parted ways, with geographic incompatibility cited as the culprit. A source told the magazine, "She lives in New York, and he resides in Indiana. It was the long distance that ultimately was the cause."

The article quotes an earlier conversation with the Indiana-born Mellencamp, who described himself as "too sensitive" to live in New York and complained, "I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets. ... I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here."

He'll presumably be required to leave the state at least temporarily when it comes time to promote his new album, the T Bone Burnett-produced 'Plain Spoken,' which is due out Sept. 23. The set's first single, 'Troubled Man,' was released Aug. 15; you can stream it now here. Just prior to the release of 'Plain Spoken,' Mellencamp will journey to North Carolina, where he'll join Neil Young, Jack White and others for this year's Farm Aid show on Sept. 13.
