An unsuccessful 2006 gig opening up for Guns N' Roses earned the Eagles of Death Metal the nickname of "Pigeons of Shit Metal" from Axl Rose. The alternative band's frontman, Jesse Hughes, is now using that slam as the title of a covers LP called The Eagles of Death Metal Presents Pigeons of Shit Metal, on which they cover the Gunners' "It's So Easy."

The vinyl-only release, which can be pre-ordered at Last Hurrah Records, also includes takes on AC/DC's "High Voltage," the Steve Miller Band's "Abracadabra," the Ramones' "Beat on the Brat" and three songs by Queens of the Stone Age, with whom Hughes is closely linked (their frontman Josh Homme drums on the band's records, and drew the new record's front cover). The collection is rounded out by tracks by the Pixies, Love and Rockets and the Distillers. Production is limited to 500 copies, with five colors of vinyl available.

Eagles of Death Metal had been slated as the opening act for 15 Guns N' Roses' shows in 2006. But after the band were poorly received on the first night, at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Nov. 24, Rose asked the crowd what they thought of the "Pigeons of Shit Metal" and said they would never be on his stage again. The upstart band was fired the next day.

Three years ago, Hughes said that, every year since that fateful night he has sent Rose a "sincere request" to Axl to record two Christmas songs to be released as the Pigeons of Shit Metal. "And I always close it with a very judgmental, 'Because I want you to know, Axl, I'm willing to forgive you, and I feel like the rest of the world is, too," he added.
