He has a little less hair these days, but Sting still has those blue, deep-set eyes that pull you in like a Venus fly trap. The Police singer and bassist grew up in Wallsend, along the northeastern coast of England. Born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, people started calling him Sting because of a black and yellow sweater (which made him look like a giant bee) that he wore to his early shows.

In addition to his music, Sting is known as an outspoken political activist. He owns a home in the United States, but has expressed disappointment with the administration's decision to abandon plans to tighten smog standards. He's also done a lot of work with Amnesty International and formed the Rainforest Foundation with his longtime wife Trudie.

In 2013, Sting released 'The Last Ship,' a musical about his childhood that will play Broadway in 2014.
