Metallica Mixes Up Their ‘WorldWired’ Set List at European Opener
Metallica kicked off the latest European stint of their WorldWired tour in Denmark Saturday night and made a number of notable changes to the set lists they’d delivered during their recent U.S. run. Their latest album Hardwired… To Self-Destruct retained pride of place, providing six tracks of the total 18 they played – but a few surprises were also in store for fans at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen.
The band delivered “Through The Never” - a brutally propulsive gem from their 1991 self-titled "Black" album - for the first time since April 2013, and went on to perform “The Day That Never Comes” and “Dream No More,” both of which were last performed in Mexico City on March 5. Then they added a cover of Budgie’s “Breadfan,” which they first released as a B-side in 1988, and hadn’t been part of their performance since a stop in Shanghai on Jan. 15.
Along with “Dream No More” the other Hardwired… To Self Destruct tracks were “Hardwired," “Atlas, Rise!,” “Now That We’re Dead,” “Halo on Fire” and “Moth Into Flame.” The show ended with traditional encore pairing “Nothing Else Matters” and “Enter Sandman,” with “Fight Fire With Fire” preceding them.
Drummer Lars Ulrich recently told Rolling Stone: “We put together the set list an hour or two before the show. Obviously, since we’re playing stadiums, it’s not like we’re going to bust out the four never-heard-before songs on ReLoad or something. But I usually have all the information about each city we played and what we played last time, so I try to put some deeper cuts in there.”
Frontman James Hetfield said of the seemingly permanent show-closing position of “Enter Sandman”: “It’s just kinda gotta be at the end. It’s that song.”
Metallica’s European run continues until Nov. 3, with further dates booked from Feb. 1 until May 11 next year.
