According to Hulk Hogan, he came thisclose to joining an early version of Metallica.

The former WWF champion wrestler and star of 'Hogan Knows Best' told the British paper The Sun that he and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich were BFFs during Hogan's days as a session musician.

"I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler," explained the Hulkster. "I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn't work out."

Bummer. Metallica's fight against Napster back in the 1990s could've been a lot more entertaining if Hogan had been involved. But is he telling the truth about the offer? During the promotional tour for his 2009 autobiography, ‘My Life Outside the Ring,’ Hogan mentioned Metallica, but the story he told back then wasn't quite the same.

“When Metallica was looking for a bass player, I called and never heard a word back from them,"  he told the Chicago Tribune. "I would have quit wrestling in a heartbeat to be a bass player for Metallica.”

No word yet from Ulrich -- or anyone else in Metallica, for that matter -- about which version of the events is true.
