The creation of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s first hit single, “Your Song,” is the subject of a new clip from the movie Rocketman.

The scene begins with John, played by Taron Egerton, working out a structure for the music to accompany lyrics written by Taupin (Jamie Bell), while Taupin and John’s mom watch. It then moves to a recording studio, where Taupin and manager John Reid (Richard Madden) watch John complete tracking, after which he asks: “How was that?”

Rocketman – taglined “A True Fantasy” – is in theaters now, with Egerton having recorded all the vocal tracks instead of John, who explained: “It was so important that the music I composed and recorded had to be sung by Taron. I wanted his interpretation of me, through Bernie’s lyrics and my music – not just acting. … I didn’t want to be in Taron’s shadows, watching over the process. I trusted them to do what they needed to do, artistically, and, listening back, I’ve been astonished with the results. Getting the music right was the most important thing, as the songs in the film are integral to the story.”

“I think I would have found it harder if it wasn't for the fact that you were so encouraging,” Egerton told John in a recent interview. “I think that was a big part of what was an enabler and facilitated me to feel kind of relaxed enough to do them in the way that we have, and, of course, Giles Martin, who produced them, who is just the most incredible man. … I owe a lot of it to him, I think.”
