Two legendary icons face off in the opening round of our new March Drum Madness competition, as Ringo Starr of the Beatles matches up against the Band's Levon Helm.

We've placed 32 of the most famous drummers in classic rock history into our March Drum Madness bracket. Over the coming weeks, their ranks will be cut in half in each of five rounds until we arrive at your choice for the greatest rock drummer of all time.

Depending on how you look at things, you either can't go wrong or can't get it right when choosing between these two drummers. Starr made big contributions to some of the most popular, inventive and enduring rock music of all time during his time with the Beatles, including songs like "Come Together," "Ticket to Ride" and "The End." Helm, meanwhile, helped the Band become one of the most important American rock groups with his drum (and vocal!) work on songs like "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

We don't envy you for having to make this decision. You can vote once per hour in each of our 16 opening March Drum Madness battles until the first round closes on March 23 at 11:59PM ET. The ultimate winner will be revealed on April 7.
