The Day Mick Jagger Married Bianca Perez-Mora Macias
The Rolling Stones left England for the south of France in 1971 to escape a tax debt that they owed to the British government. Even though they were on the run, Mick Jagger took a step toward domesticity when he married his girlfriend, Bianca Perez-Mora Macias, on May 12, 1971, at the Town Hall in St. Tropez, France.
Jagger had met the 25-year-old Nicaraguan-born Macias nine months earlier at a party following a Rolling Stones concert at the Olympia in Paris. They were introduced by a mutual friend, an American painter named Donald Cammell, and a romance commenced. Within a few months, she was pregnant. Their only child together, a daughter named Jade, arrived on Oct. 21, 1971.
The wedding almost didn't happen for two reasons. First, that morning, Jagger demanded that his bride sign a pre-nuptial agreement that relinquished her claims to his property if they were to be divorced. Even though she relented, she later admitted, "My marriage ended on my wedding day."
The second holdup was that word spread that the couple was getting married. While only four photographers had been invited, approximately 100 reporters and cameramen showed up at the town hall, which infuriated Jagger. A representative from his camp then argued with the police over the mob scene, threatening to call off the wedding. But the police sided with the press, saying they had a right to be there because it was a public building. After a delay of 90 minutes, Jagger and his bride arrived and the civil ceremony began, with Keith Richards serving as best man.
From there, they went to St. Anne Chapel for a traditional Roman Catholic ceremony, which was followed by a reception for about 200 people at the Cafe des Arts. The newlyweds honeymooned on a yacht near the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. But the marriage didn't last the decade, with Bianca filing for divorce in 1978 as a result of Mick's affair with model Jerry Hall. The divorce was granted a year later, with Bianca believed to have received £1 million in the settlement.
But before the infidelity, Mick and Bianca Jagger were rock's glamour couple. Check out some pictures from their wedding in the below gallery.
