Hear Metallica, Chickenfoot + More Perform Deep Purple ‘Machine Head’ Classics From New Covers Album
Based on the six songs we've heard so far from the upcoming Deep Purple tribute album 'Re-Machined: A Tribute to 'Machine Head',' fans are in for a much bigger treat than the sometimes dubious cover album format often delivers.
The 10-song collection, which comes out on Sept. 25 in America, features Metallica, Chickenfoot, Iron Maiden, Glenn Hughes and many more A-list rockers covering each and every one of the songs from Deep Purple's landmark 1972 album 'Machine Head.'
Metallica make a typically unconventional choice, delivering a stately reading of 'When a Blind Man Cries,' which was originally released only as a B-side of album track 'Never Before' but has gone on to become a staple of recent Deep Purple concerts. Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Duff McKagan and Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens -- operating under the name Kings of Chaos -- team up for a full-bodied, bouncy version of 'Never Before,' and Chickenfoot deliver an extended, live tear through 'Highway Star,' a track they performed frequently during their first tour.
Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith actually turns up on two covers of 'Highway Star,' also working with Purple's own Mach III and IV bassist Glenn Hughes and guitar wizard Steve Vai on a studio version of the track. Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society turns in a twisted, gnarly version of 'Pictures of Home,' and the Flaming Lips bring their off-kilter sonic approach to a gurgling, beeping rendition of 'Smoke on the Water.'
