The Black Keys have released their first new song together in five years. It's unclear, however, whether "Lo/Hi" is part of a new album project.

Frontman Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney have certainly been busy since issuing the Grammy-nominated Turn Blue in 2014. Auerbach released the solo projects Keep It Hid in 2009 and Waiting on a Song in 2017, and launched a new band called the Arcs with Yours, Dreamily in 2015. Carney has been principally working as a producer, including projects with Tobias Jesso Jr., Tennis and others.

"Lo/Hi" was written and produced by Auerbach and Carney, and recorded at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville. The pair moved from Akron, Ohio, to Tennessee in 2010. The first Black Keys album recorded at Easy Eye was El Camino, which arrived the following year. Waiting on a Song marked the debut of Auerbach's new Easy Eye Sound record label.

You can listen to their new song below.

Carney's already-announced side project would seem to complicate any larger Black Keys reunion plans: Sad Planets, which also features John Petkovic (Guided by Voices, '80s underground rockers Death of Samantha), will debut with Akron, Ohio in April. Carney hasn't played a show with Auerbach in almost four years, concluding with a 19-song set at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in August 2015.

The drummer, who wrote the theme for TV's BoJack Horseman, sat in at an Auerbach show late last year. Carney also produced 2017's Hopeless Romantic for fiancee Michelle Branch.
