Metallica are reaching back into their vaults for the latest in the band's series of remastered reissues — a freshly upgraded version of The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited that's arriving just in time for Record Store Day.

Originally released in August 1987, the Garage Days EP bridged the gap between Master of Puppets and ... And Justice for All with an abbreviated homage to the band members' influences, collecting covers of songs by Diamond Head ("Helpless"), Holocaust ("The Small Hours"), Killing Joke ("The Wait"), Budgie ("Crash Course in Brain Surgery") and the Misfits ("Last Caress"/"Green Hell"). Although it was a Top 30 success on the charts, it was intended to be something of a collector's item, and has been out of print since 1989.

Given that the Garage Days tracks were later folded into the 1998 Garage Inc. double album, none of these recordings are hard to find. But in the spirit of recapturing the era in which it was originally released, the new reissue will be available in the formats that were most popular at the time. "Keeping with our '80s theme, the remastered EP will not only be released as a CD and download, but also as several vinyl versions including a picture disc, as a cassette and in a longbox," notes the band's official site. "You youngsters can search the web for that term."

The $5.98 EP - Garage Days Re-Revisited is scheduled for an April 13 release, but fans can pre-order their copies now (for more than $5.98, natch) through the Metallica store. You can also get yourself an official "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" scrub shirt and skate deck, as pictured below. All pre-orders come with an instant download of the remastered version of "The Wait," which you can check out below.
