David Crosby is ready to mend fences with Neil Young, eight months after criticizing his new relationship with actress Daryl Hannah. The comments fractured a collaborative relationship that had stretched back to the Woodstock era.

"I was completely out of line," Crosby told Howard Stern. "I have screwed up massively. Daryl Hannah never wound up in a Texas prison [as Crosby famously did]. I'm screwed up way worse than that girl. Where do I get off criticizing her? She's making Neil happy. I love Neil and I want him happy."

The fall out was immediate, as Young made it clear he had no plans to ever work again with Crosby, with whom he'd released three albums and regularly appeared as part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Crosby later confirmed that CSNY were effectively over.

Crosby told Stern that he thought his original comments were off the record, though "that's neither here nor there." He then apologized directly to Hannah, perhaps most famous for her turn in Splash. "Where do I get off criticizing you?" Crosby said. "There are people I can criticize: politicians, pond scum. Not other artists that have gone through a hard life, same as me. She hasn't had it easy either."

All of this followed Young's abrupt split late last year from Pegi Young, his wife of 36 years. The couple co-founded the Bridge School, a nonprofit that educates children with severe physical impairments, after their son Ben was born with cerebral palsy. They'd also been musical collaborators for two decades.

"I was worried that he was going to be taken advantage of," Crosby added, "but the truth is that's not my place to judge. That's the bottom line. It's not my place to judge other human beings like that. That was judgmental and stupid and careless and I regret it a lot."

Crosby Stills Nash and Young last performed together in 2013 at a Bridge School benefit.
