With just fifteen minutes left until we were free of 'X Factor' for the rest of the year, finalists Josh Krajcik and Melanie Amaro harshed our buzz something fierce by lobotomizing David Bowie's 'Heroes.'

OK, maybe it wasn't that bad -- our co-workers over at Popcrush seemed into it -- but we're unabashedly and unapologetically loyal to the original. In one way it's nice to hear classic rock on national television, but the duo and whoever put the music together removed all of the fibers, texture and majesty of Bowie's song and turned it, like they do most things, into a mushy fake-soul upbeat anthem.

(By the way, what is the obsession with gospel choirs on shows like this? They hired dozens of singers to perform for thirty seconds, way in the background!)

You know, we try not to judge this stuff so harshly. After all, Rob Halford of Judas Priest told us personally that shows like 'X Factor' and 'American Idol,' which Priest appeared on, are great for classic rock because they expose millions of potential new fans to music they might not hear otherwise.

Which makes a lot of sense if the original performers, or people who understand and can convey the proper spirit of the music, are involved. But the backing track here sounds like it's from Cher's 'If I Could Turn Back Time,' this guy Krajcik brings nothing new to the table and it seems like Amaro was just being nice by letting him pick the song.

OK, you know where we stand on this; judge for yourself. If you're interested, Amaro won the competition. In more exciting Bowie news today, recently unearthed footage of him performing 'Jean Genie' in 1973 was released and you can (and should) watch it right here!
