Rare TV Performances Of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band Released On DVD
Pioneer, artist, crazy, bluesman, rock and roller are all terms that could be tossed out to describe the late, great Don Van Vliet, aka. Captain Beefheart. His legendary recordings like 'Safe As Milk,' 'Clear Spot' and the infamous 'Trout Mask Replica' are all essential additions to the adventurous listener's music library. Now, thanks to the fine folks at the U.K. label Gonzo MultiMedia, we can see the man and his Magic Band in action.
In 1972, following the release of ‘The Spotlight Kid’ and ‘Clear Spot’ albums, he and the band toured the U.K. and Europe. During that tour, they filmed a session for the German music show, 'Beat Club.' Of the four songs filmed that day only one track has ever been broadcast.
Forty years later, Gonzo MultiMedia have just released these historic Beat Club sessions on a DVD titled 'Capt. Beefheart and his Magic Band – The Lost Broadcasts'. These films have not been seen in over four decades and are the complete sessions from April 12, 1972. The complete track list is 'Mascara Snake,' 'Click Clack 1,' 'Click Clack 2,' 'Golden Birdies,' 'Band Introductions,' 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby 1,' 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby 2,' 'Steal Softly Through The Snow' and 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby 3.'
The Magic Band lineup at the time consisted of Captain Beefheart (vocals, harp), Rockette Morton (guitar, bass), Zoot Horn Rollo (guitar), Roy Estrada (bass), Ed Marimba (drums) and Winged Eel Fingerling (guitar).
