Yardbirds, Dr. Feelgood Guitarist Gypie Mayo Dies
Gypie Mayo, who played guitar for Dr. Feelgood and the reunited Yardbirds, has passed away. He was 62.
Mayo replaced Wilko Johnson in Dr. Feelgood in 1977 and stayed with them until 1981. In 1996, he joined the restructured Yardbirds, playing guitar with the band until 2004. Johnson wrote on his Facebook page earlier today, "Very sad to hear Gypie Mayo passed away this morning..RIP Gypie."
According to NME, Mayo, who was born John Phillip Cawthra, started his music career with a group called White Mule in 1969. He kicked around various bands until 1977, when he replaced Johnson in Dr. Feelgood.
Mayo played on six of the group's albums during his four years with the band. He co-wrote Dr. Feelgood’s only U.K. Top 10 hit, 'Milk and Alcohol,' and also played on four of the band's other five songs that hit the charts.
No cause of death has been given at this time.
