Rockers We’ve Lost in 2013: Derek Watkins

Trumpet player Derek Watkins passed away on March 22 after a two year battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. While you may not recognize his name, you probably know his sound. As a session player, he played with the likes of Eric Clapton, the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Elton John to name a few. It is his horn heard on the Beatles' classics ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane.’

In addition, his signature horn style was used in every single James Bond film. His dramatic style were also featured in films like ‘Mission Impossible' and 'Indiana Jones.’ He leaves behind a wife and three children.
