He legally changed his name after relocating to New York in the early '60s, where he gained some attention on the local coffeehouse circuit before inking a deal with Columbia Records. By the turn of the decade, he was credited with bringing an entire genre of music to international prominence, then turned his back on it simply by plugging in an electric guitar.

Since then, he's basically reinvented and redefined himself and his music endlessly, winning just about every honor, award and accolade that an artist or entertainer can in the process.
