Whatever magic Black Sabbath had cast over 1989's ‘Headless Cross’ had mostly dissipated by the time the Tony Martin/Tony Iommi/Neil Murray/Cozy Powell lineup reconvened to quickly crank out 1990’s workmanlike ‘Tyr.’

A loose concept album inspired by Norse mythology, the album replicates the reassuringly heavy but melodic direction set by ‘Headless Cross,’ only with less-inspired songs.

The album's relatively noteworthy offerings -- ‘Anno Mundi,’ ‘The Law Maker,’ ‘The Sabbath Stones’ -- are few and far between.

Faced with the fact that the band's profile in the U.S. had hit rock bottom, Sabbath decided not to tour the states in support of ‘Tyr,’ which never even charted -- a first for the group. This led to an unforeseen reconciliation with a former Sabbath singer whose own career had run out of steam.
