This future thrash-metal star already had the long, head-banging hair grown out when this yearbook photo was taken -- all that was left for him to do was put together a band and become famous. And famous he certainly did become! Can you name this famous thrash-metal musician?

This singer-guitarist formed the band that would make him a star after answering an ad placed by a local drummer in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler. The group they put together in 1981 quickly relocated to San Francisco and has since released nine studio albums, won nine Grammy Awards, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, have had four bass players and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. How many "thrash" bands cans say that?

They broke through into mainstream success with their self-titled 1991 album, which featured a mostly black cover and quickly earned an appropriate nickname based on this fact. We would rattle off a few more tidbits, but we think you should have a handle on who this is by now.
