Listen to Billy Gibbons’ ‘Perfectamundo’ Cover of ‘Got Love if You Want It’
Billy Gibbons is offering fans another sneak peek at his debut solo album, Perfectamundo.
Several weeks after releasing a video for the set's lead-off single, "Treat Her Right," the ZZ Top guitarist has leaked another track from the album: his version of "Got Love If You Want It," which you can hear above. Originally released by blues harmonica legend Slim Harpo in 1957, the song's been covered countless times over the years, but Gibbons adds a few twists; as noted by Classic Rock Magazine, which offered the song's premiere, his version highlights the Afro-Cuban sounds Gibbons filtered through his signature Tex-Mex brand of boogie rock on the LP.
Gibbons talks about the process of recording Perfectamundo in the behind-the-scenes video below, recalling how his long-ago apprenticeship with percussionist Tito Puente helped inform the sound of the new album. "Timbale, bongos, maracas, conga," he muses. "It brought back the experience I had as a youngster, when I wound up under the tutelage of the great mambo king Tito Puente. It's no secret that he was a very ferocious leader, and he led me into some really interesting aspects of timing. When we began this work on Perfectamundo, it all came back. It's like riding a bicycle."
As previously reported, Gibbons will support the new album by heading out on tour with his band the BFG's, starting Nov. 10 in Atlanta and continuing through Dec. 13, when they wrap up in Seattle. Due Nov. 6, Perfectamundo is available for pre-order now.
