Listen to Paul McCartney’s Alternate ‘Ebony and Ivory’ From Remastered ‘Tug of War’

Paul McCartney pulls back the curtain on his remastered Tug of War with an alternate version of his hit duet with Stevie Wonder, "Ebony and Ivory."

The "Ebony and Ivory" premiere comes courtesy of Billboard, whose report notes you can hear "additional vocals and a different mix that brings out the bass a bit more" in this version, which is part of the bonus material appended to the original running order. As previously reported, the expanded Tug of War now spans four discs that include a “2015 Mix” of the original record, a remaster of the original 1982 mix, a disc of previously unreleased audio and a DVD featuring music videos and a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Tug of War arrives Oct. 2, alongside a similarly remastered and expanded version of McCartney's follow-up effort, 1983's Pipes of Peace — which received its own pre-release peekaboo just a few days ago, when McCartney premiered the freshly remastered title track. It's all part of McCartney’s ongoing Archive Collection reissues, which started in 2010 with a Grammy-winning deluxe version of his 1973 release with Wings, Band on the Run.

The first of several hit singles from Tug of War, "Ebony and Ivory" helped spark something of a comeback for McCartney, who was resuming his solo career in earnest after the 1981 dissolution of Wings; the song topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, and was ultimately nominated for three Grammy Awards (Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance – Duo or Group). He'd repeat the formula on Pipes of Peace with similar success, recording a hit duet ("Say Say Say") with Michael Jackson.

In the midst of all this reissue activity, McCartney remains on the road in support of his most recent release, 2013's New, with five North American dates scheduled for October.
