Paul McCartney has given his stamp of approval to an upcoming tribute album that will feature Alice Cooper, Kiss, Billy Joel, Steve Miller and other stars performing their versions of Beatles, Wings and McCartney solo material.

The seeds for the project were planted almost 10 years ago, when producer/music supervisor Ralph Sall, who handled the music for the 2003 film ‘The In-Laws,’ crossed paths with McCartney, who had three songs on the soundtrack.

“It grew out of that experience,” Sall tells Billboard.com. “A good idea goes a long way, but it was important that it be blessed by Paul.”

Sall — whose credits include 1991′s ‘Deadicated’ (a Grateful Dead tribute), 1993′s ‘Common Thread: The Songs of The Eagles‘ and 2000′s ‘Stoned Immaculate: The Music of The Doors‘ — spent more than two years putting the McCartney tribute album together. Its title, release date and label have not been disclosed, but Sall has revealed that an accompanying TV special, featuring footage from the recording sessions and interviews with contributing artists, is in the works.

“You can tell by the variety of participants that Paul’s music is truly timeless,” Sall says. “Whether you’re 8 or 80, everyone loves Paul McCartney.”
