King Crimson’s Debut Album Sells for Almost $900

A first-pressing copy of King Crimson‘s 1969 debut album, pressed with a pink label, has sold for nearly $900 on eBay.

‘In the Court of the Crimson King,’ which is subtitled ‘An Observation by King Crimson,’ reached No. 5 in the U.K. and went Top 30 in the U.S. It’s also one of just two albums by the band to feature bassist and singer Greg Lake before he left to co-found the supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

The sleeve on this copy of King Crimson’s seminal prog-rock LP is noticeably frayed, but that clearly was less important to the winner of the auction than the label’s signature color found on this initial manufacturing run of the album.

In 2010, ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ was reissued with a new mix. King Crimson, after a lengthy hiatus, will reform next year, according to the group’s longtime leader Robert Fripp.
