Guns N’ Roses have picked the opening band for their first two highly anticipated reunion shows next month, and it’s another group of survivors from back in the day: Alice in Chains.

The initial concerts in the band’s six scheduled appearances will take place on April 8 and 9 during the opening weekend at Las Vegas’ new T-Mobile Arena. The shows will feature three members of GNR’s core lineup — singer Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan — performing together for the first time in years.

Following those concerts, they’ll head to the Coachella music festival in Indio, Calif. (on April 16 and April 23), with two dates in Mexico City (April 19-20) squeezed in between. There’s no word on who will be opening these shows, or even who will be playing with the semi-reunited Guns N’ Roses onstage for any of the performances.

There’s been speculation that some later members of the band — like guitarist Richard Fortus, drummer Frank Ferrer and keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman — will join the three founding members, but former original guitarist Izzy Stradlin (or at least someone who claims to be Izzy Stradlin) says he’s not taking part in any of the shows.

Alice in Chains have had their own tumultuous history. Following the death of singer Layne Staley in 2002, the band reunited a few years later with William DuVall at the mic. That lineup has released two albums since 2009.

Both Las Vegas performances are sold out. And so far no further dates other than the six that were previously announced are on Guns N’ Roses’ schedule, but rumors persist that these are just the first in a full-scale tour later this year … if the conditions are right.
