James Harper Grohl, the father of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, died of cancer on Aug. 6. He was 75.

According to the obituary, Grohl was, by trade, a journalist who spent much of his career in Washington, D.C. working for the Scripps-Howard News Network. He also served in the military -- editing the Stars and Stripes newspaper -- and as a special assistant to Sen. Robert A. Taft.

Five days before Grohl's death, on Aug. 1, Dave Grohl's wife Jordyn gave birth a daughter named Ophelia. She is the third child for the Grohls, who have two other daughters, Violet, 8, and Harper, 5. The news was was announced on the Facebook page of the Dave Grohl Alley Scholarship Program.

The news comes as Foo Fighters prepare to release 'Sonic Highways' on Nov. 10. The album was recorded in eight cities with a variety of guest stars. A documentary series about the making of the record will premiere on Friday, Oct. 17 on HBO.
