A couple of British heavyweights are strapping on their gloves right now. Yes and Led Zeppelin are doing battle in the first round of the 100% fan-voted Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame.

Both bands came out of London in 1968 and became celebrated for expanding the definition of rock music. Yes became arguably the definitive progressive band, incorporating jazz and classical influences into their sound. Led Zeppelin not only helped create the sonic template for heavy metal, but also frequently colored their sound with Celtic, Indian and Arabic flourishes.

If that's not a tough enough choice to make, keep in mind that the bands were almost connected. In 1981, two members of Yes -- bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White -- came very close to forming a supergroup with Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Beginning with this group, voting for our Hall of Fame will now take place over a two-month stretch instead of one. You can vote for whoever you’d like once a day from now until 11:59PM ET on Oct. 6. You can read the Hall of Fame’s official rules right here. Be sure to mark your calendars for Nov. 4, when the seventh entrant into the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame is revealed.
