Ringo Starr (born Richard Starkey) got his start drumming for another Liverpool group -- Rory Storm and the Hurricanes -- before he was asked to step into Pete Best's vacant spot in the Beatles in 1962. But unlike his bandmates, Starr rarely contributed songs, and his lead vocals were mostly shoehorned into goofy covers like 'Act Naturally' and goofy Beatles originals like 'Octopus's Garden.' After the Beatles broke up in 1970, Starr, like his bandmates, launched a solo career, peaking with a pair of No. 1 singles in 1973 -- 'Photograph' and 'You're Sixteen,' both of which featured assistance by his old pals -- as well as a No. 2 album, 'Ringo.' Starr has also acted in movies ('Give My Regards to Broad Street') and TV ('Shining Time Station'). He continues to tour with his revolving All-Starr Band.
