The Doobie Brothers Vs. ELO – Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame, Round One
Both bands started in one place and ended up someplace different. And both bands made their mark on classic rock by piling on hit after hit in the '70s. This month, the Doobie Brothers take on Electric Light Orchestra in an epic battle that may take one of them all the way to the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame.
Each month, our readers will determine which of eight legendary artists or bands is immortalized forever for their contributions to classic-rock history. The Doobie Brothers started life in the early '70s as a guitar-based rock band from San Jose that scored hits like 'Long Train Runnin'.' By the end of the decade, they were one of the nation's top pop groups, reaching No. 1 with 'What a Fool Believes.'
ELO rose from the ashes of the Move in the early '70s as an orchestral rock band fueled by classical string instruments (their cover of 'Roll Over Beethoven' is about as literal as rock 'n' roll gets). By the end of the decade, the British group was one of the world's biggest pop acts, dominating the charts with songs like 'Don't Bring Me Down.'
So who are you going to vote for? Will the Doobies roll up ELO and smoke them out of the running? Or will Jeff Lynne's turbo-powered spaceship steamroll all over the Doobies? The choice is up to you. You can vote once a day until Sunday, Dec. 15, at 11:59 PM EST, and the winner will be announced Jan. 6, 2014. Be sure to read our official rules here.
