David Bowie adopted many personae during his career (holy heck, are we really talking about him in the past tense? Come back!), but none made quite the impact of the title character of his 1972 breakthrough album 'Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.'

Ziggy was an androgynous alien who descended to Earth to deliver a message of hope and peace to humankind. You wouldn't expect such a creature to show up in khakis and a polo shirt, and Bowie didn't cut corners, sporting a stellar red mullet, outer space makeup and some especially shiny and odd-shaped outfits. Eventually, the poor soul succumbed to drugs and sex -- the inherent twin excesses of rock and roll -- but damn, didn't he look good doing it!
