You Think You Know the Beatles?

There have been more books, movies, and other assorted tributes to the Beatles than any other act of the rock era, but that doesn’t mean Fab Four lore can’t hold a few surprises even after all these years. In this installment of You Think You Know Classic Rock?, we pull back the curtain on a few of the lesser-known moments from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr‘s time together.

We all know that the Beatles got their start when Paul McCartney joined John Lennon’s band the Quarrymen, and took a step closer to destiny when George Harrison joined after being recommended by McCartney. What many of us aren’t aware of, however, is what Harrison performed at his audition — or the decidedly unusual location where that performance took place.

After Harrison joined the lineup, the group started its search for the right band name, adopting short-lived stage names along the way, one of which later inspired one of the all-time great punk bands.

It’s all in the above video, but there’s much more. In this clip, we also trace the origins of the signature “mop-top” haircut the band sported in its early days, as well as the way in which the Decca executive who infamously rejected the Beatles by saying “guitar groups are on the way out” later made up for his error in judgment by signing a band who went on to blaze their own incredible trail through the rock ‘n’ roll history books. You think you know the Beatles? Watch the video and find out!
