Yes, it's Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich's yearbook photo. Big surprise, right?

Metal's mightiest band was formed in 1981 when the Danish-born and heavy-metal-obsessed Ulrich, then living in Los Angeles, placed a classified ad seeking "other metal musicians to jam with" on "Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head and Iron Maiden" songs. James Hetfield answered the ad, and the rest is history.

Metallica marked 2013 as their fifth straight year without a new album, but the group kept busy by releasing a whacked-out 3-D concert film complete with Zeppelin-esque dramatic sequences and by becoming the first band to play on all seven continents -- including Antarctica.
