Yes, it's Joni Mitchell, one of the most important singers and songwriters of the classic rock era. She's created far more than her fair share of unique, highly acclaimed albums -- including 1971's 'Blue' and 1974's 'Court and Spark' -- and her songs have been covered by some of the biggest names in music.

Mitchell was born November 7, 1943 in Alberta, Canada under the name Roberta Joan Anderson. Her first taste of success came when artists such as Judy Collins had hits with recordings of her songs. In the late '60s she broke through as a performing artist as well, and over the coming decades proved to be an extremely restless and self-challenging artist, regularly changing styles and exploring new genres such as jazz and world music.

She's also an avid painter, responsible for the covers of many of her own albums. After threatening to do so for several years, Mitchell seems to have finally retired from the music business -- "I have always considered myself a painter derailed by circumstance." Her last studio album, 'Shine,' was released in 2007.
