We have an exclusive premiere of the title track from Van Zant's upcoming concert recording Red White and Blue: Live, featuring a theme perfectly suited for this Memorial Day weekend.

The album, due on July 1, showcases a rare live set by Van Zant, which is fronted by Donnie Van Zant from .38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zant. Johnny says the song was a key moment – especially the lyric "We're trying to sing the truth to you."

“I think that’s what we’ve always done,” Johnny says. “That’s one of the reasons both Skynyrd and the things we’ve done as Van Zant have been around so long. We really don’t know how to do anything else except sing about what we know, and try to tell the truth. I try to be as honest as possible, and I think people see that. We’re not trying to be anybody we’re not.”

"Red White and Blue" was co-written by the Van Zants with Brad and Brett Warren, and originally appeared on Lynyrd Skynyrd's 2003 release Vicious Cycle. This new project was produced by Grammy-winner Ben Fowler (Eric Clapton, Taylor Swift), and recorded during a rare Van Zant tour on Jan. 28, 2006, by Donnie's long-time .38 Special bandmate Larry Junstrom.

The backing band on the song includes guitarist Eric Lundgren from Johnny Van Zant's solo band; .38 Special keyboardist Bobby Capps; and Mark Muller, a steel guitarist who has worked with Bruce Springsteen, Steve Forbert and others.

Johnny and Donnie have recorded five studio projects together as Van Zant, beginning in 1985. Johnny took over for their late brother Ronnie Van Zant, who died in the 1977 plane crash that claimed other members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, when the band got back together two years later.
