The Doors‘ legacy on the city of Los Angeles is unquestioned, and this year the band was chosen as the primary honorees of the annual Sunset Strip Music Festival in West Hollywood, Calif.

As is tradition at the festival, one act who has contributed significantly to the Los Angeles club scene is the subject of a musical salute, and this year Camp Freddy‘s Billy Morrison and Matt Sorum, Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, 4 Non Blondes’ Linda Perry, Scars on Broadway‘s Franky Perez and Dead Sara‘s powerhouse newcomer Emily Armstrong were among those taking the stage at the House of Blues to pay homage.

In addition, the city of West Hollywood declared Aug. 16, 2012 to be ‘The Doors Day’ in a celebration that honored founding members John Densmore, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger. Densmore told Billboard prior to the ceremony that things have changed quite a bit since their early days. He recalled, “The police used to hassle us for our long hair and now we’re cool.” He also added that while they played many high profile venues, it was the small clubs where they frequently had the best time.

In addition to the music salute, there were plenty of testimonials from the likes of West Hollywood mayor Jeffrey Prang, X’s John Doe, Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, and Roxy and Whiskey owners Nic Adler and Mikael Maglieri.

The all-star band for the night opened with ‘Break on Through’ and ‘Roadhouse Blues,’ with Franky Perez and his booming voice leading the way. Dead Sara’s Emily Armstrong followed with ‘Soul Kitchen,’ and Mark McGrath took his turn with ‘Light My Fire’ during which Manzarek jumped up onstage to join in on keyboard. Linda Perry was the final guest of the evening, finishing the set with ‘Back Door Man’ and ‘LA Woman.’
