Eighties hard rock squares off against '70s power pop in the opening round of our new March Drum Madness competition, as Guns N' Roses' Steven Adler takes on Cheap Trick's Bun. E. Carlos.

We've placed 32 of the most famous drummers in classic rock history into our March Drum Madness bracket. Over the coming weeks, their ranks will be cut in half in each of five rounds until we arrive at your choice for the greatest rock drummer of all time.

Neither drummer currently plays in the band with whom he became famous. Adler was on Guns N' Roses breathtaking debut album, Appetite for Destruction, performing classic cuts such as "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City." He was gone by the time they made the follow-up Use Your Illusion LPs. Carlos, on the other hand, has drummed on every single Cheap Trick album, but he hasn't been playing with them on tour lately. Along the way, he contributed to celebrated moments from "Surrender" to the live At Budokan album to '80s hits like "The Flame."

We don't envy you for having to make this decision. You can vote once per hour in each of our 16 opening March Drum Madness battles until the first round closes on March 23 at 11:59PM ET. The ultimate winner will be revealed on April 7.
