Shawn Colvin is a talented songwriter in her own right, with a list of credits that includes her Grammy-winning hit single "Sunny Came Home," but on her new album Uncovered, she's paying tribute to songs other artists made famous — among them a handful of rock classics that includes pages from the songbooks of Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty and Paul Simon.

Colvin's cover of Springsteen's "Tougher Than the Rest," which you can listen to above, leads off the album. She says she's gained a new appreciation for it over the decades since the original's release. "It's mistaken, perhaps, for a song that's got a lot of bravado in it, and I don't see it that way," Colvin tells NPR. "I see it as world-weariness that he's conveying, and sort of a quiet confidence, born of struggle and experience and heartbreak. And 20 years ago, I didn't have as much of that as I do now — for better or for worse."

Uncovered also finds Colvin covering Simon's "American Tune," Gerry Rafferty's signature hit "Baker Street," Tom Waits' "Hold On," the Band's "Acadian Driftwood" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi" — a tune that, as she tells Rolling Stone, pretty much any touring musician can readily identify with. "I just love the sentiment. Believe me, I've played in a lot of bars and dives and didn't think I would ever get out," she explained. "It's just a great song. I basically love where the person is in the song and I love Creedence, so it seemed like a good choice."
