Sammy Hagar Says Van Halen Reunion Is ‘Lurking in the Woods’

Sammy Hagar has made no secret of his recent desire to put his past issues with Van Halen behind and rejoin the fold. In a new interview, he suggested that it’s all-but inevitable.

“That whole Van Halen thing lurking in the woods out there,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I feel there’s a sniper out there — any minute the bullet is going to come flying in that says ‘VH’ on it, ‘You’re it!’ We’ll see what happens. I don’t understand them. I haven’t understood them in a long time.”

Back in March, Hagar proposed the idea of splitting vocal duties with David Lee Roth, giving something for fans of both eras of the band. The concept has the blessing of former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, whom Hagar would want back in the band. Hagar is still committed to making it work.

“I would only do it with Sam and Dave anyway. I’d rather Dave go out and sing his own songs. I’ll sing my songs. That would be the ultimate show, I think. If we could do it that way, I would suck it up. It would be fun.”

After more than a decade of public sniping since the conclusion of Van Halen’s 2004 tour, Hagar extended several olive branches to Eddie and Alex Van Halen. He said that he would like to resume their friendship even if they didn’t work together again. “I don’t want to be buried with any regrets or bad vibes like that,” he said. “It makes you want to be just friends with everybody and say, ‘Hey look, forget it.’”
