He already had one of the most famous voices on the planet and a Commander’s rank in the Order of the British Empire, and now Who vocalist Roger Daltrey can add “first-ever patron of the Brighton Institute of Modern Music” to his list of distinguished achievements.

The school, which goes by BIMM Brighton for short, announced Daltrey’s appointment in a press release calling him “one of the most charismatic frontmen of all time” and “the face and voice of a generation,” which might be a tad hyperbolic, but is kind of what you do when a rich rock star decides to offer your institution financial support. It also reflects the personal gratitude felt by BIMM director Tony Wadsworth, who added, “Roger Daltrey and the Who were inspirational to me as a kid and were one of the key reasons why music was the only career for me. Almost 40 years later, after spending my life in the music industry , it is an honor for me that we are both linked with an organization for which Roger Daltrey has agreed to be Patron and where his inspiration and influence shines as brightly as it ever did.”

Daltrey shared his enthusiasm for the honor, saying, “I am delighted to be a patron for BIMM Brighton. BIMM is a fantastic platform for talented young musicians who are given the opportunity to thrive and grow within the music industry. I am very happy to support new music in the UK and BIMM is helping to develop and nurture future talent organically and successfully.”

School principal Vaseema Hamilton added her own excitement to the mix, saying Daltrey’s “key role as a founding member and lead vocalist of one of the most iconic rock bands in the world, the Who, as an internationally renowned musician in his own right and as an award-winning actor means he is regarded as one of the greatest artists the U.K. has ever produced and therefore will prove to be a truly inspiring patron for our aspiring young musicians here.”

Established in 2001, BIMM opened a Bristol campus in 2005, adding BIMM Dublin in 2011. Those classes seem to be pretty effective, too — BIMM graduates have scored more than two dozen top 40 singles on the UK charts.
