Rod Stewart Named ‘Dull Man of the Year’

In his career, Rod Stewart has received many honors. He’s won various lifetime achievement awards, been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and been named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Now he has another accomplishment to add to the list.

The Scottish singer was named as one of the “Dull Men of the Year” by the Dull Men’s Club, The organization cites his love of model trains as the reason for the award. “I’m proud to be a railway modeler,” he said in 2007. “It means more to me to be on the cover of Model Railroader than to be on the cover of a music magazine.”

Although it sounds like a long-lost Monty Python sketch, the Dull Men’s Club is apparently a real thing, with a global membership. According to their website, it is “a place for dull men to feel at home, to feel comfortable and to share safe excitement.” So Stewart’s award is meant as praise, unless the whole thing is intended as irony. Or something. Whatever.

While we agree that Stewart’s albums in recent years have lacked the fire and energy of his best work, we can’t completely abide by their decision. After all, his memoir, ‘Rod: The Autobiography,’ won the 2012 Ultimate Classic Rock Award for Book of the Year. So we ask the Dull Men’s Club this: can a person who has taken cocaine anally and slept with so many women as to declare that his sex life was “sad” and “f—-ng depressing” really be dull?
