The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is into its second and final weekend. Paul Simon used his headlining slot there yesterday (April 29) as an opportunity to begin his new tour.

Simon's 18-song set was heavy on hits from his solo career, with seven numbers coming from Graceland and The Rhythm of the Saints. He debuted two new songs, "The Werewolf" and "Wristband," from his upcoming album Stranger to Stranger. He also gave a nod to New Orleans' musical heritage by adding the zydeco-flavored "That Was Your Mother," a deep cut from Graceland, into the set. Simon & Garfunkel were only represented by "The Boxer" and "The Sound of Silence -- the latter of which is embedded above -- in the encores.

Nola.com says that Simon dedicated the concert to Allen Toussaint, the legendary New Orleans pianist, songwriter and producer who died last November. He wore a button on his shirt with a picture of Toussaint and said, "Life, Love & Faith" -- the title of Toussaint's 1972 album -- at one point. A month before he passed, Toussaint recorded a cover of Simon's "American Tune" that will appear on his posthumous album, American Tunes, when it's released on June 10.

In an odd scheduling quirk, Simon's set at JazzFest had a 30-minute overlap with Los Lobos' performance on a different stage. Los Lobos have long accused Simon of not giving them proper credit for their contributions on Graceland's "All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints."

Stranger to Stranger is coming out on June 3. On Thursday (April 28), he released a second song from it, "Cool Papa Bell," which is named after the legendary Negro League baseball player who was believed to be the fastest man ever to play the game.
