Paul McCartney’s ‘The Christmas Song’ Headlines Starbucks Compilation

Holidays Rule
Hear Music / Concord

Paul McCartney will head up the latest Starbucks Christmas compilation CD, ‘Holidays Rule,’ with his rendition of ‘The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).’

The jazzy version of the song likely wasn’t too much of a stretch for McCartney, especially considering he recently completed the ‘Live Kisses‘ DVD, which found the vocalist and his jazz band performing a number of classic standards. This fits right in with that vibe, as McCartney’s softly-sung version of the track is offset by the tickling of ivories and drums played with brushes in the background. The lounge-like version of the song with its warm room feel just puts the listener in the mood to cuddle up by the fire. Listen to the song in full at Rolling Stone’s website.

The ‘Holidays Rule’ set arrives in Starbucks outlets Oct. 30 through Hear Music and Concord. Other acts on the compilation include alt-rock favorites fun., the Shins, Andrew Bird, folky outfits the Civil Wars and the Punch Brothers, and New Orleans jazz favorites Irma Thomas with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

As for McCartney, the singer shows no signs of slowing down. Along with the ‘Holidays Rule’ contribution and the upcoming ‘Live Kisses’ DVD (due Nov. 13), there have been rumors that he may have two more albums in the works.
