With six of the biggest names in rock history performing over the course of a weekend, Desert Trip had the potential for some serious fireworks. Last night (Oct. 8), Neil Young sat in during Paul McCartney’s set for the Beatles classic “A Day in the Life.” The video is embedded above.

The duo had played the song before, on June 27, 2009 during Young’s concert in Hyde Park that ended with Young reigning chaos on the stage. This concluded with them forgoing the final verse in favor of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance.” After that, Young stayed on for McCartney’s live debut of “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” (embedded below) with Young taking a guitar solo.

McCartney made a few changes to the setlist, giving tour premieres to “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” “Day Tripper” and “I Wanna Be Your Man,” which may have been a nod to the Rolling Stones performing “Come Together” on Friday night. “Helter Skelter” and “Jet,” which have long been a staple of his shows on previous tours but not as frequently this time around, were brought back.

Young’s opening slot saw him backed by Promise of the Real, the band led by Willie Nelson’s son Lukas that played on 2015’s The Monsanto Years. In addition to standards like “After the Gold Rush” and “Down by the River,” Young performed four new songs that he’s premiered in the past 10 days, “Neighborhood,” “Peace Trail,” “Show Me” and “Texas Rangers.”

Desert Trip concludes tonight with sets by Roger Waters and the Who.
