Paul McCartney to Appear on Charity Holiday Single

He’s spent 2014 making touring history, debuting his first video game musical score and renewing his plea for everyone to stop eating so much meat, yet somewhere in the midst of all that activity, Paul McCartney also found time to add a new chapter to a long British holiday tradition.

The NME reports that McCartney has contributed to an all-star cover of ‘Say Something,’ the recent hit single from pop duo A Great Big World. The article says “a number of musicians and celebrities” will appear alongside McCartney on the track, which will benefit One for the Boys, a cancer-battling charity chaired by Samuel L. Jackson, who also reportedly contributed vocals.

The new ‘Say Something’ is set to be released in time for the annual race to hit the No. 1 spot on the U.K. charts at Christmas, furthering a tradition that dates back to dates back to the early ’50s. McCartney has enjoyed a number of holiday chart-toppers, including several with the Beatles as well as the massive Wings hit ‘Mull of Kintyre.’ In recent years, the year-end charts have been dominated by offerings from ‘X Factor’ contestants, sparking efforts to stave off pop dominance that include last year’s drive to send AC/DC‘s ‘Highway to Hell’ to No. 1.

Whether or not the McCartney-assisted ‘Say Something’ makes it to the top of the charts, the Macca fan on your Christmas shopping list will most likely be thrilled to receive the upcoming expanded edition of his most recent album, ‘New,’ which adds a second disc of bonus tracks and a DVD to the original LP. The ‘New’ Collector’s Edition is due Oct. 28.
