Paul McCartney Closes Candlestick Park

“It’s sad to see the old place close down. But we are going to close it down in style.”

With those words, Paul McCartney kicked off an epic 40-song set that found him returning to one of the most important locations in Beatles history while helping shut the place down. On Aug. 14, McCartney’s ‘Out There’ tour passed through San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, delivering the last event ever to be held at the soon-to-be-demolished venue where the Fab Four played their final full-length concert on Aug. 29, 1966.

ABC News Radio reports that 50,000 people attended the show, billed as ‘Farewell to Candlestick: The Final Concert,’ including several hundred who snapped up last-minute tickets made available when organizers were able to push the stage back, creating an extra four feet of room. It marked an end in more ways than one, serving as the concluding stop on the current leg of McCartney’s tour; present plans call for him to return to the road in late September.

McCartney’s Candlestick set list, which closed out with fireworks and — as the Beatles’ appearance had — a performance of ‘Long Tall Sally,’ also found him unveiling a series of never-before-seen Beatles photos, taken by photographer Jim Marshall during the ’66 show. Those images will arrive in stores on Oct. 14, as part of the new Marshall retrospective book ‘The Haight: Love, Rock and Revolution.’ Take a look at the complete set list below.
