Mick Jagger Denies Being World Cup Jinx

Mick Jagger does not believe he is to blame for Brazil’s semifinal exit from the World Cup. In a statement, he refused to admit that his presence at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte earlier in the week entirely caused the host nation to embarrassingly lose 7-1 to Germany.

“OK, I take responsibility for the first German goal,” he told NME. “But not the other six!”

Jagger’s history of jinxing soccer teams dates back to the 2010 World Cup, when four of the teams he publicly supported — including Brazil — in the knockout rounds were eliminated. Two of those teams (including his native England) were sent home early at the hands of Germany, traditionally one of England’s biggest rivals.

For this tournament, he predicted good things for the Portuguese and Italian teams at Rolling Stones concerts in Lisbon and Rome, only to have both sides crash out during the group stage. He also tweeted good luck messages to England before their 2-1 losses to Italy and Uruguay. England finished in last place in their group, scoring only two goals in three games, with their best result coming in a 0-0 draw to Costa Rica in their final game, after they had been mathematically eliminated.

The singer attended Tuesday’s match with his 15-year old son, Lucas, whose mother, Luciana Gimenez, is a Brazilian model and TV show host. Jagger’s affair with Gimenez is often credited as being responsible for the end of his relationship with Jerry Hall.
