It's a good thing Metallica's Lars Ulrich is such a great drummer, 'cause he'd never have made it as a trombone player. A new YouTube video shows Ulrich playing the instrument with the New Orleans-based brass ensemble the Soul Rebels, and laughing at his own feeble attempt.

Blabbermouth reports the video was shot in December of 2011 during rehearsals for Metallica's week of 30th anniversary concerts at the Fillmore in San Francisco. The Soul Rebels opened all of those gigs and joined Metallica onstage every night.

The video shows a clearly amused Ulrich struggling to get enough wind to play a single note on the unfamiliar instrument, but failing as he keeps breaking up laughing. When he finally does make a small sound emerge, the drummer exclaims, "I gotta go lay down now!" After a second, slightly better attempt Ulrich quips, "By Sunday . . . can you guys find me a spot in your setup there?"

The Soul Rebels also performed both nights at Metallica's Orion Music + More festival. The group released their debut album via Rounder Records in January.
