They helped shape hard-rock music in the '70s and forever after. He helped define the sound of popular music for the last two-thirds of the 20th century. Led Zeppelin take on John Lennon in the semifinals round of the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame.

In a span of 10 short years, Led Zeppelin redefined the sound of rock 'n' roll by dipping into the past and appropriating the blues they found there for a new generation. Big, blustery and pretty much the inventors of rock-star excess, Led Zeppelin can still be heard in bands picking up guitars for the very first time in 2013.

With the Beatles, Lennon steered pop culture into a whole new realm at the start of the '60s. By the end of the decade, he was carving out a solo career that would be challenging, cathartic and influential in its primal-nerve exposure. The albums he released until his death in 1980 balance head, heart and soul.

Every month, the readers of Ultimate Classic Rock will decide which of eight legendary artists or bands will be remembered for their contributions to the genre.

So, fans, who will it be? One of the most awesome rock bands known to mankind or the genius behind one of history's greatest groups?

The semifinals competition ends Sunday, Nov. 24, at 11:59 PM EST and the winner will be announced Monday, Dec. 2. Be sure to read our official rules here. Get those votes in!
