Obviously, no list featuring the coolest costumes in rock can exist without a little Kiss. When rock's masked marvels first emerged in the early '70s, they kept their true identities hidden and adopted the personas of a Demon (Gene Simmons), Starchild (Paul Stanley), Spaceman (Ace Frehley) and Cat (Peter Criss). Together with their out-of-this-world outfits, they took the costumed look further than anyone before.

After losing founding members and recruiting a Fox (Eric Carr) and an Egyptian Warrior (Vinnie Vincent) into their ranks, the group ditched the makeup for over a decade in the early '80s. After Criss and Frehley left the group for a second time, the band made the controversial move of having their replacements perform in their original facepaint.
