Julien Temple, who directed the Sex Pistols mockumentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, will helm a biopic focused on the Kinks. You Really Got Me will star Johnny Flynn as Ray Davies, and George Mackey as Dave Davies, the two brothers whose creative tensions defined the Kinks.

“This is an exciting chance to tell the Kinks story in a visceral and real way," Temple told Screen Daily. "It’s not easy to find British leading men who can deliver the kind of musically compelling performances we need, and we have those in Johnny and George.”

Flynn is an English actor and singer-songwriter. Mackay memorably starred in the musical Sunshine on Earth. Ray's ex-wife Raza will be portrayed by Juno; she's the daughter of Temple, who also directed Earth Girls are Easy.

Shooting for the Recorded Picture Company’s You Really Got Me is set to begin in the UK later this year. “This is the story of the brothers growing up and the group’s later disbanding,” Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas added. "They are the Cain and Abel of rock but their story isn’t known as well as it should be."

Importantly, the filmmakers have secured rights to the Kinks' original music, and both of the Davies brothers will help with the soundtrack. "The lyrics of the Kinks have always been fascinating to me," Temple said, "and there is an amazing human story here as well which has yet to be captured on film."
